More women having children later in life

A few days ago, a report was produced showing that women the number of women having children in their 40's has trebled.   It shouldn't be a surprise considering how many more choices we have as women now.  Over the six years that I have been coaching women around this decision, I have noticed that there has been a steady increase in the numbers of women coming to see me who are in their early to mid 40's.

I personally think it's postive that women can consider many more choices and can choice to have children at a time that is best for them.  The only caveat to this is around the issue of fertility - as it is more difficult to conceive in your late 30's or 40's.

I had kids at 39. There are more issues than fertility. There are issues like how long you will live and how active you will be when your kids are like 30 or 40 themselves. There are issues like how old the other parents are at daycare. I know a lot of people that had one, but then not a second and as older parents, their single child will be on their old sooner and without a sibling.

Other issues include how long you will live once your child is an adult, whether you will have siblings for them, how old other parents will be in your community, how much patience you have, etc.

Fertility is one a several issues. If you have a kid in your 40s, will you be there for your child when they need you later in life, or will they be caring for you? What will the peer group be like at your kid's school? Will they get to have a sibling to grow old with when you are gone?
